3 Day Diet: three day diet Plan Review, Foods, Disadvantages

What’s the 3 Day Diet Theory?

3 day diet is a very low calorie diet and quick weight loss program. This diet is intended to help people jumpstart weight loss; many heart patients have used this diet with great success. This diet works by using a unique combination of foods. When on the three day diet, these foods work together chemically and trigger a weight loss reaction of up to 10 pounds. three-day-diet

The 3-day diet is one of the few diets that has stood the test of time and is still around now. However, just because something has been around the block a bit, it doesn’t negate that it’s any good.

Also known as The Military Diet, the 3-day diet is unsurprisingly pretty hardcore. It states that you must follow an incredibly strict plan of under 1000 calories for 3 consecutive days at a time, with a 4-5 day break.

Now you could say this sounds familiar. Another more recent diet that has exploded onto our health radar is the 5:2 diet, which advocates intermittent fasting for 2 days with 5 day breaks.

So are the health benefits the same? Or is the 3-day diet just another fad? We looked into what this diet promises and asked the experts for their advice.

 3-day diet meal plan:

There are many versions of three-day diets circulating, all with the promise of bringing dieters significant weight loss in just three days. There are many variations in what dieters may and may not eat during these three days. One diet even calls for dieters to drink only water for the first day. On the second day dieters may eat fruit, and drink only fruit juice, and on the third day dieters may eat only vegetables, and drink only vegetable juice.

The most common three-day diet, and the one that seems to be the most popular, is a three-day diet with a meal plan that instructs dieters what to eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The specifics of the plan vary, as do what dieters are allowed to drink while on the plan. Some versions allow anything, others specify just water and diet soda in addition to the coffee and tea called for in the meal plan. Many require that dieters drink at least four glasses of water daily. Some allow diet soda to be substituted for the water.
One thing you have to know about the 3-day diet is that it won’t ‘work’ if you don’t stick to it exactly.

So that means following it to the letter, portion size is essential and the diet also recommends eating the food outlined, even if you do not feel hungry. A common version of the three-day diet meal plan is:

Day 1
Breakfast
-Black coffee or tea, with 1-2 packets artificial sweetener
-1/2 grapefruit or juice
-1 piece toast with 1 tbsp peanut butter

Lunch
-5 oz tuna
-1 piece toast
-Black coffee or tea, with 1-2 packets artificial sweetener

Dinner
-3 oz any lean meat or chicken
-5 oz green beans
-4 oz carrots
-1 apple
-4 oz vanilla ice cream

Day 2

-1/2 banana
-1 piece toast

-8 oz cottage cheese or 5oz tuna
-8 cream crackers

Dinner
-2 beef sausages
-3 oz broccoli or cabbage
-2 oz carrots
-1/2 banana
-2 oz vanilla ice cream

Day 3
Breakfast
-Black coffee or tea, with 1-2 packets artificial sweetener
-5 cream crackers
-1 oz cheddar cheese
-1 apple

-Black coffee or tea, with 1-2 packets artificial sweetener
-1 boiled egg
-1 piece toast

Dinner
-5 oz tuna
-4 oz carrots
-5 oz cauliflower
-6 oz melon
-2 oz vanilla ice cream

On top of your eating plan, dieters are also allowed 4 cups of water or non-caloric drinks daily.

How Does the 3 Day Diet Plan Work?

The supposed secret behind this diet is the boosted fat burning and a unique metabolic reaction that is created by the combination of foods this plan suggests. Supposedly, this is how the 3 day diet plan food combinations help burn fat, cleanse the body, increase energy and lower cholesterol.

However, in reality, the fact that the 3 day diet plan is very low in calories is probably the main reason that weight loss is achieved.

As the name of this diet suggests, the 3 day diet plan has to be followed for 3 days, but can be resumed an indefinite number of times after taking a 4 to 5 days break of “normal eating”. The reason this diet recommends to resume the usual eating style is to prevent the metabolism from slowing down and reverting to starvation mode, which can lead to fat getting stored in the body and promoting weight gain.

Should I Exercise on the 3-Day Diet?

With such low calorie intake (below 1200 calories a day), it is probably better not to exercise during the 3 days since you will not be feeling very energetic. However, if you have the energy, and/or want to exercise, exercise will not only help you to lose weight faster, but it may also reduce your appetite, making it easier to be on this diet.

Based on a study (links below) by Dr. Stensel of the Loughborough University in the United Kingdom, aerobic exercises (walking, running) are better at suppressing appetite than non-aerobic (muscle) exercises. You could incorporate a simple walking exercise on a daily basis. If the weather in your area permits, you can also take a nice walk every day. The exercise may reduce your appetite and make this diet easier.

Now, once you are off the 3 day diet, exercise will become critical. If after a period of significant calorie reduction, you all of a sudden eat “normal” again, and maybe even eat MORE to fulfill your cravings, you will need to increase your exercise level to ensure that you can keep all or most of the weight loss.

Disadvantages of the 3 Day Diet

The 3 Day Diet is incredibly low in carbohydrates, which means that the 10lbs weight loss in 3 days is likely to be mostly water weight. Carbohydrate promotes water retention in the body. Therefore, once you resume normal eating, you will regain the water weight.

  1. The weight loss is not likely to be due to any food combinations or metabolic reactions, as suggested by the 3 Day Diet, but due to calorie restriction.
  2. Essentially you are eating approximately 1,000 calories per day. Drop below 1,200 calories and your body goes into survival mode. Due to the extreme drop in calories, your body believes that this short food supply signals impending starvation. Hence your body switches gears into “starvation mode” and slows down to preserve energy. The problem here is not so much the 3 days of dieting, but the post-diet period. Your body’s metabolism would have slowed, such that you require fewer calories to maintain your weight. Since you do not require as much food after the 3 Day Diet as you needed before it, resumption of normal eating patterns means you gain weight. In other words, you gain weight by eating the same amount of food that normally would simply maintain your weight. In most people this starts a vicious cycle of weight loss and weight regain, i.e. yo-yo dieting. There is a reason why so may people fail with extreme diets and this is it.
  3. A significant drop in calories such as this, coupled with a monotonous food menu and the guideline to resume normal eating patterns, means that most people will be famished and overeat in the 4-5 days after the 3 Day Diet. In effect, you’re setting up a another vicious cycle of severe hunger due to extreme calorie restriction followed by overeating on your off days. This makes weight gain even faster.
