RASPBERRY KETONE: How does it work?

What are Raspberry Ketones?

Raspberry ketone is a natural substance that gives red raspberries their powerful aroma.

This substance is also found in small amounts in blackberries, cranberries and kiwis.raspberry-ketone

It has a long history of use in cosmetics and has been added to soft drinks, ice cream and other processed foods as a flavorant.

Actually… most people are already eating small amounts of raspberry ketones, either from the fruits themselves or because of their popularity as a flavorant (3).

Only recently did they became popular as a weight loss supplement.

Even though the word “raspberry” may appeal to people, the supplement is actually NOT derived from raspberries.

Extracting raspberry ketones from raspberries is insanely expensive, because you need 90 pounds (41 kg) of raspberries to get the amount needed for a single dose!

In fact, a kilogram (2.2 pounds) of whole raspberries only contains 1-4 mg of raspberry ketones. That’s 0.0001-0.0004% of the total weight.

The raspberry ketones you find in supplements are synthetically made via an industrial process and are not natural (4, 5, 6).

Another reason for the appeal of this product is the word “ketone” – which associates it with low-carbohydrate diets, which force the body to burn fat and elevate blood levels of “ketones.”

However, raspberry ketones have absolutely nothing to do with low-carb diets and will not have the same effects on your body.

How does it work?

Raspberry ketone is a chemical from red raspberries that is thought to help for weight loss. Some research in animals or in test tubes shows that raspberry ketone might increase some measures of metabolism. It might also affect a hormone in the body called adiponectin. Adiponectin can increase the rate at which the body burns fat and reduce appetite. However, it is important to keep in mind that there is no reliable scientific evidence that raspberry ketone improves weight loss when taken by people.

How to Take

Recommended dosage, active amounts, other details

There is no human evidence for the effects of raspberry ketones. Studies on rats have used a dosage range of .545-2.18g/kg, which correlates to a human estimated dose of 80-340mg/kg for humans. This dose is very high compared to other fat burning compounds, so for that reason the standard supplemental dose of raspberry ketones for humans is in the 100-200mg range. There is no solid evidence for the effectiveness of the doses listed below. Rat dosages correlate to the following human doses:

  • 870-3,700mg for a 150lb person
  • 1,100-5,000mg for a 200lb person
  • 1,500-6,200mg for a 250lb person

There is no human evidence for the effectiveness of raspberry ketones. Raspberry ketones cannot be concentrated in the human body the same way they are concentrated during studies done outside the body, on single cells.

What can the Raspberry Ketone Weight-Loss Supplement do?

Most brands claim the following if you take 1-3 pills, once daily:

  • You can lose between 2 to 5 pounds every week
  • Your metabolism will increase, allowing you to burn more calories
  • It will strengthen your immune system
  • Detoxes the body
  • Increases energy level

what does the science say?
“What did scientists find out about the relationship between raspberry ketone and adiponectin?
Adiponectin is a protein used by the body to regulate metabolism. Higher levels are associated with fewer fat stores. Scientists studied the effects of raspberry ketones on in vitro fat cells and observed a higher secretion of adiponectin when compared to controls.”
